game design - physical computing - illustration
Light It Out is a 3D maze adventure game that uses an alternate controller. Players use a flashlight instead of keyboard arrow keys or cursor movement to navigate an underground railroad maze.

My Role: Art direction, Illustration, Installation
Project Duration: 3 weeks (Dec-Jan 2022)
Exhibited at: 2023 Super MAGFest's Indie Arcade Showcase which had an attendance of over 18,500 people
Plot
John, a security guard, receives a mysterious alert instructing him to find a yellow door to get out of the maze.
Gameplay
Players use a flashlight to move around the dark tunnel. The light seen in the game mimics the flashlight's direction for a realistic effect.
Challenge
Although the goal of the game is to reach the end point, to add a challenge, we introduced an unseen entity that the player would need to hide from. If they hear footsteps, they need to turn off the flashlight to avoid being caught. This mechanic adds a sense of urgency and purpose, driving players to explore the maze in a tense atmosphere.
Storyboarding
Testing
The goal behind testing the set-up was to figure out the:
●  optimum size of the aperture through which the photo resistors would receive light
●  distance between each of the photo resistors
●  distance between the flashlight and the screen so light does not reflect on the screen and interrupt gameplay.
